Frequently Asked questions

Etch is a Unified Visual Development Environment (UVDE) for WordPress. It empowers you to build entire websites visually, much like you’d do with a page builder, but it doesn’t come with all the downsides of traditional page builders. It outputs clean code, gives you full access to the code, and unifies the critical parts of your workflow. For example, you can create Custom Post Types (CPTs) and custom fields, manage media, manage content, manage SEO optimization, and a lot more directly from within Etch.

Additionally, Etch writes everything you build to core WordPress blocks (Auto Block Authoring) for full data liberation and a wonderful client-editing experience. This kind of functionality is unprecedented, making Etch the most “close to core” development environment available for WordPress.

Etch is for anyone who understands – or wants to understand – the fundamentals of modern web design. When it comes to beginners, we love beginners and strongly believe that beginners deserve to be empowered with real tools (not dumbed down tools) because they are fully capable of learning! Our unprecedented commitment to education & detailed support means that beginners using Etch are fully empowered in their journey. If you aspire to do quality work in the field of web design and development, regardless of your current skill level, Etch is the best possible tool for you.

Since these pricing plans are subject to imminent change, we’re asking customers to purchase the plan they want to stick with long-term. Upgrading is a manual process and won’t be possible once these plans are replaced with our subscription plans in September.

Etch is currently being worked on by a team of 11 — the same team responsible for other successful Digital Gravy products like Automatic.css and Frames. It’s 100% privately funded through our highly successful pre-sale campaigns and has the necessary content, leadership, relationship, and marketing engines to gain significant marketshare. There’s a really good reason why Etch has all the market momentum in the WordPress visual builder space — it’s the future of visual development in WordPress.

Etch is on a weekly release schedule for new features and we sometimes release multiple versions in a week when bug fixes are available. This ensures users don’t have to wait for an arbitrary day of the week to receive stability updates.

Yes, features that aren’t included in a given plan at this time can be added later by purchasing an add-on or by upgrading from one plan to another at a pro-rated price.

Etch is a WordPress plugin with a blank companion block theme. The block theme is only required to hook into the block editor for Auto Block Authoring capabilities. You can actually use Etch with any block theme, but the “theme as architecture” concept does not apply to Etch.

Etch V1 will be production stable in September 2025. Users are encouraged to use Etch prior to the V1 release only for no-consequence or low-consequence websites.

Etch comes with everything you need to do your work without having to manage an extensive library of add-ons. Here’s what we consider core features:

  • The builder plugin and companion theme
  • All basic elements (section, heading, text, image, video, etc.)
  • All dynamic elements (accordion, carousel, modal, etc.)
  • Auto block authoring
  • Code access and authoring
  • Components
  • Loops (basic and advanced)
  • Dynamic data
  • Logic engine
  • Templating engine
  • CPTs and custom fields
  • Performance features
  • SEO features
  • Media manager
  • Content manager
  • History states
  • Dual monitor support (planned)
  • Multi-user support (planned)

The only features planned as add-ons or restricted from lower tiers are:

  • Woocommerce elements and templates
  • Version control system
  • Native AI / LLM packages

Your Etch license gets you access to the Etch private support and education community. This is a circle-based community with thousands of other Etch users where you can ask questions, get support (from both the community and our official support team), learn best practices, learn advanced techniques, get feedback on your work, and have general discussions around web design trends, agency topics, and more.

Agency plans provide access for multiple team members depending on the level you choose.

Etch will eventually replace the following:

  • Page builders (Elementor, Divi, Bricks, Breakdance, etc.)
  • Block themes & block systems (Kadence, Astra, Generate, etc.)
  • CPT & custom field plugins (ACF, Metabox, etc.)
  • Media management plugins (HappyFiles, etc.)
  • SEO Plugins (Yoast, SEO Framework, etc.)
  • Performance Plugins (Perfmatters, FlyingPress, etc.)

All refund requests must be made within 30 days. A refund will be issued for the price paid minus 5% for processing and handling of the request.
